Reminiscence Experience

The experience of reminiscing on one’s past is a proven therapeutic intervention that improves self-esteem as well as feelings of fulfilment and comfort (Klever, 2013).

One method to maintain social connections is through reminiscence experience. This involves reminiscing about important and memorable events in your past with your family members is a proven therapeutic intervention that improves self-esteem as well as feelings of fulfilment and comfort (Klever, 2013). The process, with help from family members and/or friends, would use various prompts such as photos, videos, or important objects related to the memories to discuss various events in the past (Alzheimer's Society, 2021).

These conversations have multiple benefits. Firstly, they help keep your memory active because you are challenged to remember and reflect on details of your past (Akhoondzadeh, 2014). Additionally, the reminiscent experience induces a feeling of familiarity which appears to reduce feelings of loneliness and increase psychological well-being (Chiang, Chu, & Chang, 2009). This is a positive experience since conversations relate to your important and memorable life events, reminding you of times where you felt accomplished, happy, and empowered. Further, these conversations are shared with family members and friends which would help to strengthen bonds and improve social interaction.
